Attorney Josh Olsen just proposed to country colleague Stella Sheridan and agreed to her aiming at a more substantial type of cases when her homely mother Barbara Sheridan invites herself, having been dumped by father Stanley for a younger model. Meddling, needy Barbara proves a pest, even intruding the bedroom. Despite -or commiserating with- humiliating self-invited maternal ‘comfort company’, state senator Maureen Holmes hires Stella to fight her husband for sole custody of their pre-teen sons. Josh’s wedding planning desire is waved, Barbara can’t accept Stella’s father Stanley dumped her for much fitness coach Jazzy, Stella’s former schoolmate. Barbara takes ‘clairvoyant’ hairdresser Rita’s cue to start an affair with Stella’s esteemed adversary, Josh’s boss Richard Duncan. Stella’s chaotic sister Maddie arrives to ask parenting and in turn invades Stella’s bedroom, astonishingly soon followed by recanting father Stanley. All before the trial, as well as an incident where the boys go missing, which makes Stella reconsider her plea.
