I had to watch a few minutes of this just to see for myself if it was as bad as everyone is saying … to my amazement, it’s worse.

eff 12/21 : Brand New HDCAM Versions. There’s occasional adverts and open-mic Audio with this.

Despite the poor IMDB Rating, it was nominated for a Golden Globe Award:

Best Original Song - Motion Picture Andrew Lloyd Webber (music/lyrics by) Taylor Swift (music/lyrics by)
For song “Beautiful Ghosts” )

Judge for yourself.

They should have re written it for the screen. It was meant to be a stage production spectacle with cool costumes, singing and dancing. It did not have a strong plot to begin with.

I’m not a fan of ALW or really anything Broadway; although, I did sit in the front row at one of Yul Brynner’s last performances in The King and I, and I was spellbound, but mostly just because of him and the iconic role. I tried this. I wish I hadn’t.

If you want to see Cats as it should be performed, watch the 1998 version: https://www.primewire.li/movie/1336292-watch-cats

Casting absolutely killed this. Unpopular opinion here but, someone has to say it. Jennifer Hudson BUTCHERED that song…

TreeofWoe13 0 points 4 years ago.

Fully agreed that Hudson did a terrible job on the song. She didn’t capture the proper emotion at all. If the rest of the film had been better,(though I didn’t totally hate it),her performance would have ruined it. It didn’t put forth the proper feeling for the climax.

I wanted to like it. I wanted to be the one who bucked the trend and pointed out its redeeming features. I wanted to … but I couldn’t. The only good thing is the gorgeous Francesca Hayward and her dancing. But that’s just a drop in the slop bucket. Well, there were one or two moments that were all right (e.g. Skimbleshanks), but not enough to redeem this catastrophe.

this movie is dog sh*t!

strange. i’ve never seen the entire play (i’ve seen bits and pieces) but i knew it was strange to begin with. i do think jennifer stole the show, no surprise there. didn’t love the modern choreography they gave to derulo and his backup dancers. mostly i was irritated by the proportions. they were not only incorrect, but also inconsistent. the sets were too large and the “cats” would be more like large bird size at that ratio. i definitely won’t watch this again. i wanted to see it to understand what the musical was about since it’s one of the few i haven’t seen. i think most of it is pointless honestly. there are some metaphors, some important characters and lessons. but mostly this play is ridiculous nonsense. if you’re going to write a show at least give it substance.

nikkimckelvy -8 points 5 years ago.

The director clearly understands how to get emotion out of his actors and CGI more than telling a story. I will grant everyone that. The CGI is beautiful. The acting is beautiful, but the music itself is butchered. Several of my favorite songs are either bowdlerized or missing completely. The dancing is fantastic, but the numerous problems and loose ends with the script make the movie laughably bad in some areas. “Memory” still makes me cry. There are many areas where the play could have been improved. If it had gone the other direction, this would have been much better than the play, and I love the play. In musicals, less is not more. More is more. The editing really harms the film, but the terrific acting, dancing, and CGI make up for it.
