An artist, more than usually hard up, is at his wits’ end how to raise the necessary amount of cash required. His wife comes to his aid and by a happy inspiration they hit upon a scheme. Dressing the model to resemble a blind man, they take it out and, placing it in a chair, fix a card in the coat, “Spare a penny, please.” The results are excellent, and securing the proceeds of the pathetic appeal, the artist and his wife retire. Meantime, a wandering vagrant is struck by the lonely figure of the model, and bearing it in his arms, he takes the model to his room, changes clothes, and sits in the model’s place. The artist and his wife have a severe shock when they find the “poor old man” has failed to raise a cent, and still more so when the model takes to his heels and bolts. Meantime the dummy has been found by the police and is tenderly carried to the station. Here the fact that the “dead” body is but an artist’s model is solemnly arrived at, and, finding the owner’s card in the figure’s pockets, it is carried back to the artist, who affectionately embraces the unconscious earner of a little “ready.” |
