Details:

Anime’s popularity in the US had its birth through the efforts of early fans who copied and traded often-untranslated anime tapes obtained off-air from UHF stations or by trading with Japanese science fiction fans. ANIME in the USA: Tapes from the Underground traces the history of tape trading and fan-subbing, from the early videocassette days up to peer-to-peer trading of the present. Features interviews with such anime experts as Jerry Beck, Fred Patten, Isaac Lew, and fan-subber Tofusensei.
