Disillusioned thirty-two year old Karen is forced to spend her birthday alone when her friends don’t show up to her party. After hours of waiting inside an empty dance hall, she is surprised by the arrival of a rude, alcoholic clown- a last-minute replacement for the violinist she ordered. Initially, their relationship is tense due to their conflicting personalities, but when they reveal their personal struggles to each-other, they begin to form a bond. Karen lives her life in the past, desperately wishing to become her 23-year-old self again, back when she was loved and full of possibility. The Clown has turned to alcohol after being denied a relationship with his daughter, and yearns for the chance to be a father figure to someone. Together, they are able to experience a small, but poignant moment of happiness in an otherwise hopeless situation. |
