When Dennis Hopper is buried under a simple mound of earth in a small neighborhood cemetery outside Taos, filmmaker Kathleen Brennan sets out to learn about the days of ‘Easy Rider’ and Hopper’s ongoing attachment to this small, traditional village in the mountains of New Mexico. She interviews friends, neighbors, art professionals and a local historian for their memories and reflections of Hopper’s life among the artists, hippies and townspeople of Taos. Dennis Hopper’s commitment to living large is reflected in his early wild days and his later success as an actor and creative artist. Hopper continued his long and varied career in his later years as a renown collector and supporter of the arts. Hopper’s neighbor in the Easy Rider days, Jane Mingenbach, recounts the wild escapades and drug culture of the seventies, remembering: “They talked about cocaine like it was good for you, it was organic they said.” Rena Rosequist, art dealer and friend, reflects: “The whole artistic tradition of Taos … gave him a place to be accepted as an artist, as a serious filmmaker.” Ray Trotter, gallery owner and friend, says: “One of Dennis’s favorite things was to come to Taos because when he came to Taos, he was just Dennis.” Jina Brenneman curator of the local museum shares: ‘He (Hopper) was one of the most creative people I have ever met in my life.’
