Details:

Henry Stahl dislikes his job. Henry Stahl dislikes life. But Henry Stahl loves Sarah Reverie. Working in a sign shop in Malibu, California, Henry is forced to seek refuge into his fantasies. The only problem is that even in his fantasies, Sarah is less than ideal. In fact, it’s not unusual for her to even break up with him in his fantasies. Still, Henry keeps going back for more because although his fantasy relationship with Sarah isn’t ideal, it’s real. It’s the most real thing Henry has in his life. This story takes place on a particular Thursday. And on this day, Henry undergoes his usual daily antagonism from his boss, Mike, after which he begins to clean up an alleyway full of garbage. It is then that Henry begins to daydream about Sarah, imagining her as an inspiring girlfriend and he as a confident and charming boyfriend. She tells him to “put yourself out there,” as Henry abruptly awakens, hurries inside, and heads out onto the street to get some work done. Once he’s outside, he sees his rival spinner at the opposite corner, but despite his insecurity decides to take him on. He fails miserably and returns inside. Inside, Sarah is nowhere to be found. Henry searches out back, but nothing. Suddenly, Sarah appears in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet, wearing a red dress. Henry is confused, especially when Sarah tells him that she loves him. As things start to get a little odd, Henry hears Sarah’s voice but now it’s coming from another room. He turns to look and sees Sarah, dressed in her work clothes, running towards the front door of the shop and out into the street. He remains at the bathroom threshold, conflicted and confused over seeing two Sarahs existing at once. It is at this point that we realize that Henry’s real life and fantasy life are intersecting. We follow the real Sarah outside as she shouts “Henry!” towards the road, where the real Henry still stands in the middle of the street after having lost his dual against the rival sign spinner. Completely fed up, Henry goes inside and gets himself together. Sarah follows and asks if he’s okay. Without a word, he leaves the shop as Sarah pursues. For the first time in the film, the real Henry speaks with the real Sarah. He spills his guts to her, proclaiming his feelings, letting her know that he can’t see her everyday knowing that he’ll never be with her. He walks towards the ocean where Sarah catches up with him and she reveals that while people feel like love needs to be exciting or distinctly unique, she wonders if love should instead be something simple and easy. She wonders if what we’re looking for all along tends to be right in front of us.
