“Memphis Psychosis” is an exploration of the twisted and brilliant mind of British author, musician (The Deathray Tapes, Vampires Stole my Lunch Money), activist, and beatnik icon Mick Farren, a key player in the London underground scene in the 1960s and beyond. The piece tells the story of one man’s inherently innocent journey to see Graceland gone awry through the purchase of a handful of pills in the restroom of an all-night diner. As the protagonist, “Pilgrim” states in the piece, “I was in the mood for conspicuous consumption, and the ghost of Elvis was at my shoulder”. As the pills kick in and the hallucinations get more surreal, psychotic babes, sinister hitchhikers, bats and monoliths are only a few of the horrors Pilgrim encounters on his wild ride to the lair of the King. |
