The director’s (non-narrative) remake of James Benning’s non-narrative remake of John Cassavetes narrative feature Faces or, sort of in another sense, just Hayes’ own interpretation of the notion of Faces/what they mean to him in the context of what he tends to focus on in his projects which, especially as of late, have concentrated on grief and his means of coping with his father’s death; an ode to the artwork that his father collected throughout the period of his life spent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a digital time capsule accompanied by an original score. The literal object(s) of focus in this “audiovisual display” are the paintings, sculptures and various objects left behind by his father before he passed away from esophageal cancer, the ones still set up around the house that he lived and raised a family in with Eli’s mother for almost twenty-five years. Dedicated to Jeffrey Russell Hayes (1946-2012). |
