A documentary about the love of music and the fascination with the saxophone in Peru’s Central Andes. SAX COUNTRY introduces us to the musical world of the Mantaro Valley, high in the Central Andes of Peru, where the musicians have a love affair with the saxophone. These Andean sax players use their instrument, which is more often associated with blues, jazz and rock and roll, to express the deepest emotions and traditions of their native mountains. The film shifts back and forth between the Mantaro Valley and New York City, the Big Apple, where the Mantaro musicians dream of playing, and where a renowned Peruvian saxophonist from the valley lives in absolute loneliness. The documentary contrasts the spirit of the fiesta with the hardships of a musician’s daily life and confronts the fascination for New York in the heart of the Andes with the painful reality of exile. |
