Baltimore City, Maryland. Cancer survivor Eden Stotsky’s young adulthood is threatened by a possible recurrence of colon cancer. Discouraged by some from doing so, she is nonetheless determined to undergo her annual colonoscopy to discover if the cancer has returned. A health educator at the Johns Hopkins Colon Cancer Center, Eden is fully aware that a colonoscopy is the best way to see if the cancer has come back. Six weeks after celebrating her sixth anniversary of being cancer free with her parents, who are both cancer survivors, and her close friends, Eden begins preparing for the colonoscopy the night before she is scheduled to have the procedure. The following day, Eden arrives at the clinic for the colonoscopy. During the colonoscopy, Eden’s physician finds a polyp on her colon and removes it for biopsy. But the major obstacle through this harrowing time of uncertainty is not the preparation for the procedure, nor the colonoscopy itself, but waiting for the results of the colonoscopy and knowing for sure if the cancer has returned. It will be two weeks before the pathologist will return the biopsy results. Eden turns to her cancer support group for back-up while she waits for the results. Through her own sense of cancer survivorship, Eden discovers the courage and strength to triumph over this time of great uncertainty regarding her future well-being. These are the remarkable and moving moments of one of the more than 11 million American cancer survivors’ brave and winning fight against cancer. |
