Short documentary about the critically-endangered Hawaiian monk seal, which is the most endangered pinniped in U.S. waters and the Official State Mammal of Hawaii, with rare and exclusive footage of a week-old female monk seal pup named Kai playing with trash. An ancient species, there are only about 1,100 of them left. The two main reasons they’re going extinct is malnutrition (from overfishing) and entanglement in marine debris so this is not just a case of ‘natural selection’ when we’ve taken their food and replaced it with trash. |
