Inspired by the works of John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg and Stan Brakhage, 161! is a visual poem that explores human perception. The images show a contrast between a child’s innocence and adulthood. Are the scenes taking place in the same general location, at the same time? Are the events of the child a distant memory in the woman’s mind, or are they a product of her imagination? Is it a dream? In considering these possibilities, the brain searches for visual and auditory clues in an attempt to create a story. Rather than come away with a narrative understanding of the images, immerse yourself in their range of colors and sounds. Allow time to stand still, and welcome the opportunity to resist the need to re-create. |
