What is regarded as the first ever internationally sanctioned limited-overs match between two Test playing nations, was hastily arranged on the fifth day of the abandoned Third Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It consisted of forty eight-ball overs for each team (320 deliveries, or 53.2 six-ball overs), and prize money to the value of A$5000 (A$2400 to the winning team, A$1200 to the losing team, and A$100 each to the umpires). Australia won by five wickets with 42 deliveries to spare. John Edrich was named player of the match with a top score of 82. Match attendance was 46,006 (gate receipts A$33,894.60). |
