In Fasenfests most sustained exercise in filmed abstraction, a rain-drenched residential New York city block is transformed into a quick-footed dance of light, shadow and color. The ripples of raindrops on puddles, re-made into hundreds of isolated pinpricks of shimmering light, bounce off one another, turn pinwheels, brighten, deaden, merge, diverge, and soar thrillingly in and out of the frame, all to the muted sounds of the city in motion. The film is close in matter and spirit to the late hand-painted abstractions of Stan Brakhage, the flickering dreamscape of Phil Solomons Remains to Be Seen, and — most poignantly — the sprocket holes, tears and marks of decay in a film strip, which Fasenfest gives a new and dazzling kind of digital life. |
