A vast number of still frames from classic Hollywood and avant-garde films — some unaltered, others superimposed or otherwise tinkered with — flit by the viewers eye at lightning-fast speed, colliding, merging, and exploding to the nine-bagpipe strains of a Julia Wolfe composition. Certain figures linger on the frame like after-images, but the overall effect is closer to the aggressive back-and-forth flickering of Peter Kubelkas Arnulf Rainer or the steady, euphoric builds of Stan Brakhages late-career hand-painted abstractions. Collider is an ecstatic, hallucinatory experience, and a seamless integration of high and low moving image culture. |
