Ben was adopted, but he’s always resisted trying to find out who his parents were. Maybe he was scared he might find something he didn’t like. But now he’s got his own child, Grace, and he thinks the time has come. With the encouragement of his wife, Sophie, and a filmmaker friend who wants to document the process, Ben discovers his mother died, two years after he was born. She died in childbirth. The baby survived. Ben has a brother. And he sets out to find him. They were both adopted - Ben by a kind couple who loved him, but Peter’s road was rougher. He was born deaf, bounced around foster homes all his life and now lives a lonely, isolated existence. Ben and Peter both grew up without siblings and no blood relatives of their own, so now, having found each other, they’re making up for lost time. Their friendship blossoms as Ben learns to communicate with Peter and they share in each other’s lives. But when a DNA test reveals that they’re not related at all they fall apart, both feeling ashamed and betrayed to discover their relationship was built on a lie. Ben rejects Peter. They’re both alone again. But without each other, they’re both worse off, so Ben convinces his own adopted parents to adopt Peter into the fold. Ben, his parents, Peter, Sophie - none of them are related by blood, but they are very much a family. |
