The history of this great ship is as follows: 10th of August 1628, Vasa, the most powerful warship in the Baltic, set sail to conquer and intimidate; all to find itself foundering in the Stockholm harbor minutes after setting sail for the first time. Before the very eyes of the king and would-be proud Swedes, Vasa sank to its watery grave where it remained for hundreds of years. The embarrassing fate of the ship is actually highly beneficial to Sweden’s cultural history. The ship remains one of the only relics of its time for historians to referred to, as most ships where dismantled for firewood at their lives’ end. |
