Jose Casanova is one of the top scholars in the sociology of religion. One of his books, Public religions in the modern world, became a modern classic in the study of religion and politics. In this widely renowned book, he reevaluates the theory of secularization in light of the global resurgence of religion, focusing on the phenomenon of deprivatization, or religious re-engagement in the public sphere. In this mini-documentary, Jose Casanova elaborates on his research and his views on world society. Casanova was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the academic world. The honorary doctorate was awarded by the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, on the occasion of its 400th anniversary.
