I thought I was watching a Brazilian film about a sleepy, bucolic village in the middle of nowhere. That introduction actually went on for nearly the first hour. Then it quickly transformed into a classic human hunt horror show with some really interesting twists!
This movie is definitely very different than anything I’ve ever seen. It combines drama, thriller, horror and a dash of surrealism. On top of that, it’s part Brazilian and part American in it’s cast and language.
The Americans aren’t depicted in a very favorable light; mostly racist, uncaring and cruel. Somehow, I think this was a commentary on how the abject poor might see us from afar.
I thought the ending scenes were worth the wait, but you definitely have to be patient as it unfolds. 4/5 for originality
wow what a hidden gem !!!!!!
Can you please tell me something about it? The synopsis & fact that it has like 8 genres ranging from western to sci-fi has me a bit confused on what it even is.
Expanded IMdb Stroyline: “Set in the near future, the film follows Teresa (Bárbara Colen), who comes home to Bacurau, a fictional village in Brazil’s semi-arid sertão, to attend her grandmother’s funeral. Upon her arrival, Teresa immediately observes signs that Bacurau is in dire straits. Basic amenities are in short supply, mobile-phone coverage is fading, clean water supply is dammed and the truck that brings potable water arrives riddled with bullet holes. It soon becomes apparent that the corrupt government has forsaken the village completely: not only has Bacurau been literally erased from the map, but its citizens are under attack. As the responsible close in, the villagers must prepare an organized resistance to avoid greater damage.”
IMDb’s Official Trailer is also enlightening. See it HERE.
