The human experience of pain is rarely embraced. When individuals indulge in pain, they are deemed unusual, ill or obscene. Painful Bliss presents the eastern tradition of body suspension as explored by an underground Perth society. The documentary explains why these individuals are compelled to pierce their skin with large modified shark hooks and suspend themselves from an elevated rig. For them, pain is a means in which they experience a natural bliss; a chemical reaction in their body which promotes mental cleansing and enhanced consciousness. Painful Bliss is a brief look into the world of taboo in which humans generally shy from. |
