Who You Are is a docu-drama that offers a rare uncensored glimpse at the darker side of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) human and civil rights. In this feature length film, the story of hate crimes against LGBT communities around the world will be told through never-before-seen images, real documentary footage, and interviews from outspoken LGBT human and civil rights supporters. The images in the film, though disturbing to many, are designed to do just that—alert people to the pandemic state of LGBT hate crimes and unnerve them to the point of action. “Who You Are” will explore many aspects of the LGBT struggle, from America’s stance on gay marriage, teenage bullying, and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, to the role religion plays in the international backlash against gay rights. The film takes an unflinching look at what can happen when governments decide to take a backseat in the enforcement of civil rights, or worse, turn against their own citizens merely for being who they are. Through footage generously donated by “InterPride, International Association of LGBTI Organizers”, viewers watch what happens as Pride celebrations turn into bloody battles against right-wing extremists, neo-Nazis, and religious radicals. But for all the darkness and tragedy, viewers also get a taste of amazing displays of courage and conviction throughout the community worldwide. Interviewees share their experience and hope as they address the recent resurgence in LGBT hate crimes. If there is any message this film wishes to convey it is simply this: “The LGBT revolution is an unfinished revolution.” |
