An examination of the urban trend of artists being displaced from the neighborhoods they made livable. Liberty Village: Somewhere in Heaven follows the stories of residents of Toronto’s “Liberty Village”. In the 1850’s, “Liberty Village” was home to prisons and the Mercer Woman’s Reformatory. Industries moved in after, and the area was all but abandoned until the late 1980’s, when artists took over the empty warehouses and built a community. Now, businesses, condos and 24-hour supermarkets are driving the rents up and the artists out. |
