Laura struggles with the grief of losing Michelle. On the day of her funeral, she travels out to an isolated church in Cornwall, uninvited and unwelcome. Leading the funeral service, Angela reinvents Michelle’s life and loves. Through a series of flashbacks we see Michelle’s true nature as she falls in love with Laura. Taking Laura home to meet her family, they are met with hostility and leave, angry and hurt. Terrified as a child by her sister Angela, with threats that if she was a bad girl she would end up ‘down there’, buried beneath the ground, Michelle’s wish was to be cremated. In a final act of love, Laura sets fire to the coffin; the flames of the white fire.
