The West Coast of the south Island of New Zealand is desperate for more electrical power. With high annual rainfall and steep rivers, Hydro generation is the obvious answer for the region. However, the resulting dams would alter the pristine natural environment forever. This documentary looks at two very different approaches to this problem using two current hydro power proposals in adjacent river valleys. One proposal would dam 14km of a pristine wilderness river, the other proposal would generate power from polluted mine water. Sound like simple choice doesn’t it? |
