A bittersweet comedy about Sophie (7) who gets a present from her parents that she’s wanted for a very long time: a very cute hamster called Jensen. Unfortunately, the present comes with the very sad news that her parents are getting divorced and Dad’s moving out. Mum and Dad are modern parents and the last thing they want is to see Sophie upset, which is why they buy her the hamster! Of course, Sophie would like her Dad to stay, but there’s nothing she can do about it. Or is there? On the day her Dad moves out, Sophie sucks Jensen up in the vacuum cleaner by accident and when her parents see their sobbing daughter with a hamster, that’s coughing violently, they jump to the wrong conclusion and think that Jensen’s dying of pneumonia! They postpone the move and Sophie realizes that as long as her parents think the hamster is sick, they’ll stay together - definitely better to have a hamster in the vacuum than a removal van in the driveway! When the hamster stops coughing, it’s hoover time again. Accidently the hamster dies before Sophie start hoovering. By pretending that the hamster has run away, Sophie manages to persuade her parents to postpone the divorce indefinitely. However, Sophie discovers that her plan doesn’t bring happiness as her parents, who could live with each other as long as the move was in sight, are now at each other’s throats. Bickering and hateful comments fly through the air and when it’s too much to bear, Sophie buys a new hamster and pretends that Jensen has come home. Even though she knows that it means her parents’ divorce will go ahead, she knows it’s the best alternative: Sometimes it’s far worse to stay together for all the wrong reasons.
