We meet Bernie Tiede (1958- ), a chubby undertaker, who takes pride in his work. He’s a Gospel-singing tenor. In a series of interviews with townspeople, mixed with flashbacks, we follow Bernie: he arrives in Carthage, Texas (pop. 7,000), where old ladies adore him; he befriends a wealthy, mean-spirited widow named Marjorie Nugent; they become companions in both daily routines and expensive vacations. Among those interviewed, only her stockbroker and Danny Buck, the local district attorney, are unsympathetic toward the sunny, sometimes saccharine Bernie. Marjorie changes from sour and alone to happy with Bernie; then she gets possessive. What will sweet Bernie do? |

This was actually really, really funny and also kind of sad, but the thing that I got the biggest kick out of was hearing Jack Black sing hymns and Inspirational songs I grew up singing in church. My high school band mate, Brian Doerksen is a famous Praise and Worship song writer, but I’ve just never really gotten that much out of that kind of song. I like the hymns, and hearing Black sing Just As I am or Standing on the Promises made the movie extra special. The commentaries from the townspeople was very well done. I hadn’t heard of this murder case before this. Thank you so much, uploaders.
I actually own this on DVD because I saw it in Dollar Tree and saw who was in it and couldn’t pass it up for $1.06. lol I love that they went to the town the incident happened in and interviewed the locals there about it. That is what made it so funny—well, that and the spectacle of Mr. Tenacious D. “Heavy Metal Forever Dave Grohl is my Best Friend” playing a churchgoer singing gospel hymns. But, regardless of philosophical or theosophical leaning, you can’t deny the inherent beauty of well-performed gospel music. This is prolly his best role since he appeared as a joke on American Idol and sang a Seal song.
