“LA Woman” is musician/performance artist Kate Crash’s interactive documentary of multi-generational female leaders in LA’s cultural scene, including taped interviews with over 20 artists, gallerists, and arts administrators, including post-modern choreographer/dancer Simone Forti, performance artist Barbara T. Smith, artist and publisher Susanna B. Dakin, filmmaker/actor/poet S. Pearl Sharp, conceptual artist and legal mediator Dorit Cypris, artist and social entrepreneur Valerie Valazquez, and others. The evolution of the documentary film, into a more infotainment-based vehicle, disrupts the intrinsically educational value of the art form. LA WOMAN attempts to inject the least amount of editorial ‘spin’, and to present as visual/oral history, portraits of the interviewees in the least modified way, resulting in an introductory data-base of preliminary information, on these impressive woman, their lives, and their works. Through understanding the multi-generational lineage and how they accomplished their feats we can realize how their actions have created positive and progressive change. Through the documentation of their experiences we can inform our own work and future generations on how to expand the rights of people and the environment. |
