This is one of those things that hurts my heart, like the 60s Three Stooges.
In all of them, I want them to be funny but they need to be faithful to the original material. The 60s Stooges tried really hard but Moe and Larry were too old (and Curly and Shemp gone) to do the kind of slapstick they used to do, so those were more like throwbacks to 40s musicals. This Addams Family TV movie had the same problem - the actors were there, basically, but the writers didn’t seem familiar with the original shows (or comics). So they shoehorned the Addamses into a late-70s sitcom script. I mean, there was nothing about the Addams Fam that would have included Chippendales dancers in disco Speedos (that shiny gold/silver fabric). This show should have been made as “A Three’s Company Halloween” instead. Heck, the 90s (IIRC) movies were spot-on Addams Family even though the actors were different (and Christina Ricci was good enough to have had a Wed Addams spinoff :) ).
And seeing the actors I loved resorting to this kind of stuff, knowing that it’s because even the most popular actors in the mid-20th century didn’t make a whole lot off their work (IMO The Stooges should have been set for life) is just heartbreaking. :(
