Oh wow I swear you are reading my mind today. I was just thinking of some of the Stephen King movies that didn’t work out well in retelling the book etc. Many of them have but they are usually the ones that he worked on personally. The one he says he regrets the most is the first Shinning with Jack Nicholson and since then he hasn’t passed over the rights for other screen writers to do as they wish. That he favors doing the screen writing himself.
Actually, I’m kind of surprised he regrets that one as much as he does. I was just a kid growing up when I went and saw that, had not read the book yet, but went to see it, liked it, Afternoon showing, was only a handful of people there, but one young girl was right in the middle of the place, taking notes on a pad, and after the movie was over, out of curiosity I went and asked her what she was doing, tapped her on the shoulder, and she went one way, pad and pencil went the other! About jumped out of her skin! Movie really got to her. Turns out she was the ‘movie critic’ for the local paper. She actually commented on me doing that, and scaring the crap out of her..🤣
Thing I think of, though, is the TV movies they did, and the very first one that comes to mind every time with King is when they did The Dead Zone…that was my favorite book for a long time, and when they came out with the movie version I was all over it, until I got to watch it. Man, what an utter let down! So many things they left out that that movie needed, and so many things left in that were not all that important to the story. Needed another hour. Could have made that a part movie event, not like that had never happened before, and I remember a lot of people saying that at the time.
A lot of people felt very let down by that movie, and not just that one, but thinking that was the first big King movie that was a total let down, at least for me. Took a perfectly good book and then just destroyed it. Was not long after that they came out with the series. Can’t remember now if I paid any attention to that now or not, but probably not.
