Having lived through the AIDS pandemic, I’ve found no other movie has realistically captured the emotional and societal devastation the gay community experienced during those first years of the AIDS epidemic like this film. We all lost so many wonderful friends. It was never ending. Some went quickly, but many painfully lingered. I can still feel the absence of their presence in my life today.
At the time, it was a bold move on the part of the filmmakers behind this movie, and actors, to tackle the controversial/taboo subject of AIDS/homosexuality. No other studio would touch it. Bruce Davidson was rightfully nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role, but sadly lost out. Having just re-watched this film after all these years since I first saw it in the theater, it still has the same emotional impact on me today as it did back then.
If your interested, watch the documentary “We Were Here” for a more informative and in-depth look at the first outbreak of AIDS from the gay men and woman who stepped up to help care for AIDS patients and the pioneers of AIDS Awareness. https://www.primewire.tf/movie/1083474-we-were-here
