George Romero considered this art-house take on modern vampire movies to be his masterpiece. Lacking the frantic pacing and graphic violence of his Dead films, many won’t appreciate that he has once again made a film that takes a more realistic approach to horror as opposed to the supernatural. Martin, played by John Amplas, says in the movie that “Things only seem to be magic. There is no real magic. There’s no real magic, ever.” and that perfectly sums up his take on horror in our real lives. The twisted minds of humans, the dangerous things we create, and indifferent acts of nature are the stuff of nightmares.

Many of the actors in this will be familiar to fans of Romero’s work, including actor/FX artist extraordinaire Tom Savini. Savini has done double duties in some of the Dead movies as well as Knightriders and the Creepshow movies for Romero. Makeup and effects work for 2 of the Friday the 13th movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the Machete movies, From Dusk to Dawn (movie and series), Grindhouse, and even acted in a couple of rolls outside the horror genre like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Django Unchained. As if that isn’t enough, there is also video game voicing and appearances in a couple of Twisted Sister videos on his resume. Keep an eye out for a cameo by Romero himself as Father Howard.
