Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter were superb. I watched this film many times beginning at a young age. The older I became the harder it was to watch it knowing there were no advocates for those poor horses. I still love Clark Gable to death.
Totally agree, but the brutality is part and parcel of the story. It is about casual destruction and torture as well as casting away what is perceived as old. It’s hard to watch, but it’s meant to be, in my opinion. Clark Gable was phenomenal in this as well, thanks for the reminder.
