It blew out of an erupting volcano in southern Kyushu over 20,000 years ago. This pyroclastic deposit known as "shirasu" is a fine soil that now covers a vast plain. But unsuited to cultivation, it soon became known as a curse among locals. Now scientists have created a new material with it.
