Movie:
Umberto D.
( 1955 )
Umberto Ferrari, aged government-pensioner, attends a street demonstration held by his fellow pensioners. The police dispense the crowd and Umberto returns to his cheap furnished room which he shares with his dog Flick. Umberto's lone friend is Maria, servant of the boarding house. She is a simple girl who is pregnant by one of two soldiers and neither will admit to being the father. When Umberto's landlady Antonia demands the rent owed her and threatens eviction if she is not paid, Umberto tries desperately to raise the money by selling his books and watch. He is too proud to beg in the streets and can not get a loan from any of his acquaintances. He contracts a sore throat, is admitted to a hospital and this puts a delay on his financial difficulty. Discharged, he finds that his dog is gone and, following a frantic search, locates him in the city dog pound. His room has been taken over by the landlady and the now-homeless Unberto determines to find a place for his beloved dog, and then kill himself. Unsuccessful, he resolves that his dog must die with him and he stands in the path of a train, with his dog in his arms.

Celle also took in, as if their baby brother, his son Gunther. Nobody expects the knave (13) to grow up and become a respectable citizen either, despite his better IQ and attitude, as his uncles' and father's mischief and reputation seem to sabotage every single opportunity. Discovering love may motivate him after all, or accidental paternity could drag him down to father's level.

Keith Lowell Jensen: Atheist Christmas
( 2014 )
Social scientists have found, time and again, that one of the least trusted groups in North America is atheists. They rank lower than most ethnic and racial minorities, and even lower than convicted rapists. People would rather elect politicians who have done drugs or had affairs than those who might admit they just don't quite get on board with the whole son-of-a-virgin-and-a-terrible-and-swift-God deal. The reason most give is that they can't imagine how an atheist who doesn't believe in a power higher than themselves--a power that can punish them for wrong-doing--could possibly have a moral compass. Science is not miracle enough, they seem to say. Humanity and compassion are not morality enough. December 25th without stocking stuffers that poop candy coated raisins are not celebration enough. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where Keith Lowell's Jensen's Atheist Christmas Special comes in. Join Jensen as he cozies up in a cardigan and slippers, stepping in from a blustery night backstage to take his place in front of a non-denominational deciduous celebration shrub and jaunts through the American psyche. Are the Whos of Whoville any less inspiring than two rebellious California lesbians? Is a bird exacting instant karma any less miraculous than finding a white baby in the Middle East? Is a church camp counselor any more moral than a confused teenager with an erection that could cut class? Is a hungry tiger tossing an effigy of a human baby into the ol' Easy Bake Oven any more lovely a creature than a 3-year-old with no need for dolls? Are we--gulp--good without God? Keith Lowell Jensen is. In fact, he's f*cking great without God. You'll for yourselves in this hour-long comedy special, fresh outta the Stand Up! Records comedy lab.

Huddersfield
( 2007 )
Story is set in a small town in Serbia. Rasha is thirty, lives with his alcoholic father and trying, and failing, to make ends meet by giving literature lessons to teenage girls and hosting a program on the local radio, presenting new books and interviewing authors. Ivan, a promising judoist in his teenage years, has since had a history of neurosis, psychotic episodes, hospitalization, being heavily medicated, involvement in various occult groups and practices, prior to having been baptized in the Orthodox Church. Milla is very attractive, energetic, resourceful and very straightforward: it immediately becomes clear that, apart from having a student/teacher relationship, she and Rasha are lovers. Doole is a wannabe yuppie: he works for the local representative of major confectionery brands and is doing his best to act the part of a successful businessman who is well aware of global business trends - as he sees them. The monotony of their lives is interrupted by arrival of Igor, who has lived in Huddersfield since the beginning of the nineties, and this is the first time he's come to visit since. They all get together in the evening, and what begins as a cheerful high school reunion party of close friends with a lot of catching up to do, turns into an emotional roller coaster of reminiscing, dark humor, bitterness, uncontrollable laughter, anger, grim soul searching. Through the very personal accounts of their own lives and lives of their high school friends, we get to reveal the ominous mark the final decade of the twentieth century has left on them and their entire generation, and find the answer to the question: do they have the strength to move on?

Red Dot on the Ocean: The Matt Rutherford Story
( 2014 )
Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt Rutherford, a severely troubled youth, who became a sailing legend. Departing Annapolis, MD in a scrappy old 27-foot fiberglass sloop without fanfare, 30-year-old Rutherford braved the icebergs of the arctic and mountainous waves of Cape Horn to become the only person to ever sail single-handed, non-stop around the Americas; a 27,000 mile journey many professional sailors declared "a suicide mission." As a youngster, Matt's ADHD and tics made life at home and at school near-impossible. At age 13 he was in drug rehab and he spent his remaining teen years more on the streets than in school. Then, at age 17, locked up in a cell, he had an epiphany and decided to turn his life around. Matt attended and excelled at a special high school for troubled youth where he developed a desire to explore the world. After graduating, he bought his first sailboat - sight unseen on the Internet. Over the next few years he bought boats on the cheap, fixed them up, and learned to sail on the fly. In 2008, Matt embarked on a single-handed voyage from the USA to Europe, West Africa and back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. He'd found his calling. In 2011, Matt took on his biggest challenge: a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the Americas. He did it for himself, and to raise money for disabled sailors. After 309 days at sea, Matt achieved his goal and sailed into Annapolis to a hero's welcome. Matt's story is told through his own words and interviews with his family, sailing experts, and others. We use family photos and video of his childhood; Matt's own footage of his early sailing days; and video, audio logs, and stills from his historic around the Americas voyage. To this we add additional ocean footage; archival visuals of earlier explorers Matt admires; and re-enactments from Matt's troubled past. Matt Rutherford's story is full of surprises. It is truly inspiring and makes us all feel we can do more than we ever imagined.

Life in Loops (A Megacities RMX)
( 2006 )
Timo Novotny labels his new project an experimental music documentary film, in a remix of the celebrated film Megacities (1997), a visually refined essay on the hidden faces of several world "megacities" by leading Austrian documentarist Michael Glawogger. Novotny complements 30 % of material taken straight from the film (and re-edited) with 70 % as yet unseen footage in which he blends original shots unused by Glawogger with his own sequences (shot by Megacities cameraman Wolfgang Thaler) from Tokyo. Alongside the Japanese metropolis, Life in Loops takes us right into the atmosphere of Mexico City, New York, Moscow and Bombay. This electrifying combination of fascinating film images and an equally compelling soundtrack from Sofa Surfers sets us off on a stunning audiovisual adventure across the continents. The film also makes an original contribution to the discussion on new trends in documentary filmmaking.
