Adapted by Euclydes Marinho, the series is inspired by the homonymous work of Sérgio Porto - also known as Stanislaw Ponte Preta - and brings stories of different women adapted to the present day.

The year is 1829: Jason Firbeck, a retired naval lieutenant recently widowed, takes sons Samuel and Luke and daughter Jassy to New South Wales to claim land bequeathed to them by a wealthy friend. A strange new world greets the Yorkshire family. Amid red-coated soldiery, yellow-jacketed convicts, and a tanned peasantry governed by a wealthy elite, the Firbecks equip themselves with arms and supplies, and set off across the sweltering plains; the hardships and hazards they face confirm Lukes resolve to become the leader of his family of pioneers.

This sharp black comedy, with strong elements of political satire, follows the misadventures of a naive young clerk, Harvey McHugh, as he tries to secure a permanent position in the Australian Public Service. As his quest progresses, Harvey gains many startling insights into how the Australian government and bureaucracy operates behind the scenes, especially through his dealings with the powerful and manipulative politician, Michael Muldoon - invariably referred to simply as "The Minister" -- who heads the department where Harvey is employed and who thinks nothing of resorting to corruption, murder, terrorism, and using Harvey as a guinea pig in illegal medical experiments to cure his long-term fatal illness. What is more, Harvey is so innocent and trusting that he doesn't realise any of this is going on.

The country characters include real estate womaniser Derek Unn, his wife (known as Attila), determined Isabelle Turnbull and her beautiful daughter Katy. Scott Major also stars as the confused farmhand Tom.

Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story is an Australian drama-miniseries. The miniseries is set in the period 1960-75, when the Murdoch and Packer families collided as they battled for control of Australia's newspaper and television industries.
