Makanda Mahlanu, The Snake With Five Heads, is a documentary of a 1993 street theatre production that traveled throughout Zululand in anticipation of the first open and free elections in South Africa. A performance commissioned to bring an awareness of democracy and voting rights to never served rural and urban populations, it included four Zulus and two whites performers who performed in violent townships, farming communities, bus stations, health clinics and union halls; Inspired by a Zulu myth of a snake with five warring heads and one body, the story and performance became a metaphor for a country torn by racial and political strife. With Makanda Mahlanu, Zulus could gather and once again celebrate who they are and the new freedoms they had obtained. |
