Lines follows three disadvantaged teenagers who eat, sleep and drink skateboarding. Poised to graduate from the Venice Boarding School, - a LAUSD accredited school for at-risk youth, - Dante, Eugene, and Silvio find a connection with each other and a support system, which they haven’t found anywhere else. At VBS, skateboarding isn’t off-limits; it’s actually encouraged. Throughout the film, the kids open up and reveal the hardships that have shaped their lives. While they all acknowledge they’ve made mistakes, it’s clear they haven’t had much guidance, and that they really just want to learn how to be “men.” Part of skateboarding’s appeal is that it teaches them this and other life lessons, and they’re able to find mentors in the form of “cool dudes to look up to” at Planet Maple Skate shop. But as the realities of graduation and the real world press upon them, all three boys wonder what’s next. Will it be going pro or going to college? Do they really have what it takes? Against all odds, they are confident that they will succeed - but they’re only just beginning to sense that true “success” will take more than just dreaming. LINES shows us that success isn’t necessarily about money or fame; maybe it’s just the ability to do what you love, to live artfully, and to communicate in a way that only you know how. |
