Insert Masking, Flashing Bulbs is an experimental video concerning the history and rituals of Mardi Gras and the first Fat Tuesday held after Hurricane Katrina. Joining archival and contemporary images from 1927 to 2009, broken voice-overs elude to the expressive freedom and familial linkage demonstrated during the festival, as well as the need to preserve such traditions in the face of tragedy. While juxtaposing footage from family archives against public archives clouds the distinction between personal and collective memory, the piece calls attention to the deconstruction of film form and the ambiguity of historical construct. |
