Mrs. Sew and Sew is a 1943 period piece exploring female gender roles in wartime London. Whilst holding one of their regular meetings at a Victorian teahouse, three high social class women contemplate their gender roles when they cross paths with Rosemary, a working class, radical feminist. Rosemary has assumed a man’s position of manual labour during the war. She voices that she feels patronised by the messages directed at women, and urges her three new friends to no longer ‘make do and mend’. Something vital is going on in this teahouse, something that may be viewed as a precursor to the Women’s Liberation Movement. |
