Hailing the yellow cab is no doubt a hallmark of New York culture the majority of city residents would describe as a mundane process. As for the minority, this same task for three Afro-American teenage males trying to catch a ride into Brooklyn from Upper- Manhattan can quickly prove to be anything but as simple. Hailing a yellow-cab can be, in this instance, a sign of an unspoken, clearly existing, caste system. Revealing itself through what’s referred to as “taxi-cab profiling” consciously making the snap-decision that “I will not pick this particular person up because of the way they look”, when there are no visible supporting motivations for it may be l right for one driver, tolerable with two, but when cab after cab is just blazing past al you in a heated rush, it makes quite a reflective statement. How do you respond to such a slap in the face? |
