What happens when an embryo automobile salesman, with no knowledge of motor cars - not even price - attempts to “sell” an attractive feminine prospect, furnishes the plot for the first of a new series of all-talking Pathe Checker comedies recently released entitled “The Salesman.” The new bit of high-speed fun which stars Frank Davis and includes in its cast a Studebaker President Eight Roadster was produced and directed by George LeMaire. Davis plays the role of a seeker for a position as a salesman of Studebaker cars. He invades a salesroom and attempts to align himself with the sales staff. Does he know anything about automobiles? Well, none of the details. Does he know anything about salesmanship? Only in the broader sense. He would, however, be very willing to devote his great personality and natural talent to the selling of Studebakers in consideration of a $10,000-a-year salary. His offer is not well received-in fact he is instructed to “slam the door as you go out, so I’ll know you’re out of the place,” or words to that effect. But even as he starts to comply, he meets opportunity face to face in the person of a young lady bent on buying a car. She mistakes him for a salesman and on the theory that nothing succeeds like success, he determines to sell her the car, demonstrate his ability and land himself a job. The mere fact that he knows little or nothing about the car is only a slight handicap. He extols its virtues at great length and even arranges such little details as price and payments without regard for any of the conventions of automobile merchandising. Her innocent questions and his inspired responses make up a 1930 model all-talkie, fully equiped with laughs, giggles and whole hearted chuckles.
