Over 99 percent of all farmed animals in the United States are raised in concentrated animal feeding operations. The changes in agriculture over the past 150 years have not only damaged our health and environment, they have also endangered the diversity of farm animal breeds. ‘Heritage’ is a documentary short about Marty Travis, a farmer in central Illinois who has recreated a 19th century family farm through crop diversity and heritage breed American Guinea hogs. In 2007, the registered global population of the American Guinea hog was under 200 pigs. Thanks to farmers like Marty, the numbers are coming back using farming practices that are more sustainable. The film serves as an example of how small farming can help solve our current agriculture crisis. |
