A delusional filmmaker named Irving Spek makes dinky movies: he’s at work on a short film, ‘Dinky Menace,’ using small toy figures. An interviewer makes fun of his style and of his earlier shorts, ‘Melt’ and ‘A Time to Recycle.’ Her criticism causes Irving self-doubt. He’s hung up on Fox Searchlight when they called to invite him to consider making a feature, but now, in crisis, he calls them back hoping for another chance; he breaks into their lot and runs onto a set, he imagines he’s directing. Is this demented state the home of many young filmmakers, or just our Irving? |
