Brazilian boy Gabriel Matos is still very young when he learns that the 2014 World Cup will be held in his home country. He couldn’t know his life would be turned upside down by then. To transport hundreds of thousands supporters to the football stadium, a new rail line is being developed straight through his neighbourhood. Houses are being demolished, entire families are forced to move and even the children’s local football pitch will disappear. Through the eyes of fourteen-year-old Gabriel we get a glimpse of another side of the World Cup, miles away from what FIFA would like us to see. ‘Gabriel reports on the World Cup’ is about the duty of the government to do everything that is necessary to secure children’s rights. |
