This stop motion short enters the world of my 9 year old autistic son. Through claymation and home footage, I create magic realist scenes out of James’ favorite things: rubber gloves, licorice, and miniature chairs. The focus is not on the problems associated with autism but with the extreme pleasure James gets from simple sensory experiences like digging in the dirt or splashing in water. Perhaps autism, in its hyperawareness of the tangible world shows another route to joy. We all have the capacity to do the Happy Dance. |
