Piero Colombani’s 35 years long career as a painter has always been characterized by a an utterly original and provocative style. During the ‘70s and ‘80 he was employed as an assistant at the anatomic-pathology lab in Sarzana’s Hospital. Colombani’s daily relationship with death burst into big paintings depicting corpses, severed limbs, zombies under the aim of ‘making the horror aesthetically pleasing’. During the past 12 years Piero Colombani has been painting a ‘Deposition from the Cross’ in a tiny cemetery chapel in Sarzana, Italy. Now an internationally recognized painter, he developed a newfound form of painting, the New Gothic, which is a personal interpretation of the Flemish and Gothic tradition. This documentary tells the story of Piero Colombani’s journey from darkness to light.
