John loves the theater. He is married to Peggy, a former actress, but her selfishness repels him. He leaves her and meets Shirley, who is more responsive to his sexual needs. He becomes infatuated with Shirley and believes that she loves him. They plan to marry, have children, and buy a large house in the country. Meanwhile, Peggy invites John to see a new play with her. She also takes him to a backstage champagne party. Shirley discovers their secret meetings and accuses him of cheating on her. When she throws him out of her apartment, he is forced to reassess his needs and his relationship with Peggy.
