In the shade of some trees at the campus of the university of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a Congolese popular painter suspends his canvas. On the basis of some pictures gleaned amidst former leaders, the artist retraces the history of a forgotten students revolt which has been violently repressed by the end of the 60’s, under Mobutu’s rule. This setting provokes a public and collective remembrance among today’s students and puts forward the topic of uncompleted mourning. As the painting progresses, the predicament of the current students reveals itself through talk that gradually throws off its shackles. |
