Scott Tucker began racing relatively late in life but has always dreamed of winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona. After an unsuccessful attempt in 2009, Tucker recruits six world-class drivers, a pair of seasoned engineers and a renowned engine developer for the 2010 race. But his newly transformed Level 5 Motorsports team has less than six weeks to prepare. When the team arrives at Daytona International Speedway, there is no doubt Tucker’s crew is capable of guiding either the No. 55 or No. 95 car to victory. But can experience and determination compensate for a lack of practice time and team cohesiveness? In its first pre-race practice, Level 5’s Daytona dream is dealt a crushing blow. With Lucas Luhr behind the wheel, the 95 makes contact with another car and crashes into a tire wall. The damage causes the 95 to miss qualifying; it must start the race at the back of the field. On race day, the track is deluged with rain for an hour before the scheduled start. Despite the sloppy conditions, Christophe Bouchut maneuvers the 55 into second place by lap 15. For the next 23 hours, the Level 5 team battles the elements, their competition, fatigue and a series of unexpected challenges in an effort to keep their cars on the track. As endurance racers well know, the only car that can win a 24-hour race is one that finishes it. But Level 5 won’t be satisfied with a mere finish. |
